ABSTRACT
Abigail Powers was born in the town of Stillwater, in Saratoga County, .New York, in March 1798. She was the daughter of Abigail Newland Powers and Lemuel Powers, a Baptist minister. Two years after her birth, her father's death left the family in financial straits. Abigail’s mother decided to move westward with a group of relatives and friends, in an effort to stretch her meager resources. The widow resettled her family in the frontier town of Sempronius, in Cayuga County, New York.
