ABSTRACT
Ellen Louise Axson was born in Savannah, Georgia, on May 15, 1860, to Samuel Edward Axson and Margaret Jane Hoyt Axson. Her father, a Presbyterian minister, had been ordained the previous spring, six months after his marriage to her mother, herself the daughter of a Presbyterian minister. Ellen was the first of four children born to the Axsons.
