ABSTRACT

Jacqueline Lee Bouvier was born on July 28, 1929, in Southhampton, Long Island, New York. She was the elder of two daughters of Janet Lee Bouvier and John (”Jack”) V Bouvier III. Although much about Jacqueline's early years suggests luxury and privilege, her father 's heavy drinking and the stormy relationship between her parents encouraged her to distance herself from much that went on around her, and she developed an inordinate insistence on guarding her privacy. She found pleasure in horseback riding, at which she excelled, and in drawing and poetry. She thus developed, as a youngster, the interests that would sustain her throughout her adult years. Her genuine respect for artists and their work helped shape not only her White House years but also those that followed.
