ABSTRACT

Barbara Pierce was born in New York City on June 8, 1925, the third of four children born to Marvin Pierce and Pauline Robinson Pierce. The Pierces were socially prominent in affluent Rye, New York. Barbara's great-great-great-uncle was President Franklin Pierce (1853-1857); her mother was the daughter of an Ohio Supreme Court justice. At the time of Barbara's birth, Marvin Pierce was the assistant to the publisher of the McCalls publishing company; by 1946 he had risen to president of the company.
