ABSTRACT

Both her parents were strong positive influences on Rosalynn. She took to heart her father's admonition to better herself and take care of her family. Her mother helped Rosalynn develop a strong internal moral code by not establishing strict rules of conduct. She expected her children to do the right thing. These high expectations and the altered family circumstances after her father's death placed a heavy burden on Rosalynn. Reflecting on this time, she wrote, "I had to be very strong-or appear to be strong. But I wasn't." She cared for her three younger siblings and helped her grievingmother.
