The relationship was overshadowed by World War II. George was accepted at Yale, but decided to defer his admission and enlist in the U.S. Navy. Shortly after graduation from Phillips Academy he left for preflight training at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Barbara and George saw little of each other for the next ten months as Barbara was completing her senior year in high school and George was sent to Minnesota and Texas for further flight training. Their correspondence continued unabated. In June 1943, Barbara graduated from Ashley Hall and George was commissioned an ensign after completing his training as a navy pilot.
