ABSTRACT

THE FIRST TWO VOLUMES of Lord Briggs’ magisterial history of the BBC, which cover the years 1925 to 1939, make no mention of Japan. 1 This might suggest that in the years prior to the outbreak of the European War BBC coverage of Japan was virtually non-existent. Conversely, one might assume that during the Pacific War (1941–1945) coverage of Japan would be especially detailed. However, neither of these suppositions is borne out by surviving records of BBC talks transmitted to audiences in Britain. 2
