ABSTRACT
THE WORD KATA, so important in many aspects of Japanese art and culture, is a difficult word for which to find any single adequate equivalent in English. The word has been rendered variously ‘form,’ ‘style,’ ‘pattern,’ and other similar concepts. Many of these terms, as I hope to point out, can be found, in one way or the other, to be applicable to the nō.
