ABSTRACT
This paper demonstrated the presence of bacteria in periareolar inflammatory conditions. Using special transport media, Staphylococcus aureus and a variety of anaerobic organisms were isolated from the majority of the lesions which we now refer to as periductal mastitis (for more up-to-date discussion of terminology, see related reference 4).
