A total of 757 patients with operable breast cancer and 389 patients with locally advanced disease were treated with total (or ‘simple’) mastectomy and radiotherapy to the chest wall and draining lymph node areas. The 5-year actuarial survival rate was 62% for operable cases and 29% for advanced cases. In contrast, radical surgery and postoperative radiotherapy during the preceding time period at the same institution yielded a 50% 5-year survival rate.
