ABSTRACT

In this important study, Spiegel and his colleagues reported 10-year follow-up data from a prospective randomized trial of group therapy in women with metastatic breast cancer. In a previous paper (related reference 1), Spiegel et al. had presented results showing that a supportive group intervention that included professionally led peer group support, emotional expression, relaxation therapy and autohypnosis produced psychological benefits. The treatment group (N 50) had significantly lower scores on the Profile of Mood States (POMS), fewer maladaptive coping responses and were less phobic than the control group (N 36), and had less pain.
