ABSTRACT

Egan reported on 1000 X-ray mammograms performed at the MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute between 1956 and 1959. This was the first report of a blinded analysis of the mammograms. Egan intentionally did not have access to the clinical information, so that his interpretations of the mammograms were not biased. He also avoided the use of an indeterminate report to insure that he was fully committed to his interpretation. The study included a follow-up of all cases.
