Posterior pituitary tumors Posterior pituitary tumors are rare. The most common primary posterior pituitary tumor is the granular cell tumor, usually an incidental finding at autopsy. If the tumor causes symptoms, diabetes insipidus is usually the first symptom, a rare finding with pituitary adenomas. Astrocytomas, usually low-grade, also occur in the posterior pituitary.
