ABSTRACT

Postoperatively, because of the stress response, catabolism, and (in some cases) disturbed nutrition, patients with existing diabetes usually require more insulin. Those in a prediabetic state may become insulin dependent. Consequently, postoperative bloods should routinely include a glucose estimation. If the level is found to be high, it is best managed by using the hospital protocols that are in place at the time. Details of available regimens are given in Chapter 55.
