ABSTRACT
The anaesthetic management of the pregnant woman is important to all anaesthetists in training. Practical aspects of the care of the pregnant woman are described in Chapter 45. Optimal management requires an understanding of the underlying physiological changes in the mother and fetus. This chapter separates these into maternal physiology, the placenta, and fetal development.
