ABSTRACT
White cells (leukocytes) (see Table 31.2 and Figure 31.2) have important roles in homoeostasis and the defence of the body. The cells are in general motile and can leave the circulation by passing between endothelial cells and entering the tissues. They enter the tissues in response to chemicals (chemotaxis) released locally by, for example, an inflammatory response.
