ABSTRACT

The principal function of the lungs is to maintain appropriate levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the body. This need arises as a direct result of cellular aerobic metabolism which consumes oxygen and which, in turn, creates a constant demand to eliminate carbon dioxide. This constant gas exchange between venous blood and inspired air is one of the key factors in maintaining an optimum intracellular pH. Table 21.1 highlights some of the other functions of the lungs.
