Neurons are also defined as having diverging and converging behaviour. Divergence is the property of a neuron to influence several other postsynaptic pathways. Convergence is the ability of a number of terminal buttons from one neuron or from several neurons to work synergistically to trigger the postsynaptic cell membrane (Figure 23.16).
