ABSTRACT

This chapter considers various strategies for the primary prevention of osteoporosis. Secondary prevention (analogous to treatment) is considered in Chapter 6.

As a considerable amount of bone may have already been lost by the time that a fracture occurs, prevention of bone loss is likely to be a more effective strategy for reducing fracture incidence than is the treatment of established disease. There are two general strategies that may be adopted to achieve this objective-the high risk and the population approach.
