ABSTRACT

The authors consider the evolution of relations between the EU/NATO and Russia, within a framework of analysis suggested by geopolitics theory. They first establish and outline a framework to help the reader understand the outlook and approaches of Russian leaders. They then consider the sources and nature of EU and NATO relations with Russia during the 1990s in order to test the nature and the extent to which attitudes and approaches on the Russian side have matched those which geopolitics premises would lead us to expect.
