ABSTRACT

MIKOLYZK’s 1990 study importantly updates and revises the material found in Miller’s guide. Although titled a “biobibliography”, Mikolyzk examines Hughes’s life only briefly, intending instead to provide a detailed resource on “all collectable published work by the author, as well as virtually every critical piece published throughout the world”. Mikolyzk read each item listed in an effort to insure the relevance of the piece to Hughes scholars, the accuracy of the citation, and the availability of the source, thus making this book an invaluable tool for students and researchers who must rely primarily on systems of inter-library loan to obtain material. The bio-bibliography consists of an annotated list of books by Hughes, which is categorized according to genre (e.g., autobiographies, books for children, edited books, novels, plays, etc.), including: translations by, and of, the author; shorter works by Hughes, including essays, interviews, letters, plays, poetry, and short stories; secondary books and articles, which are either wholly or partly devoted to Hughes; an alphabetical listing of Hughes’s works; descriptions of primary source locations; and information about The Langston Hughes

Review, the semi-annual “Official Publication of the Langston Hughes Society”. Mikolyzk’s work offers the most comprehensive bibliography of Hughes material to date.
