ABSTRACT

Although this review deals only with books, the Charles Lamb Bulletin (published by the Charles Lamb Society in London) offers an excellent index to the developments in Lamb studies. Early critical work on Lamb was often marked by an apologetic or defensive note, but work on trends of reception and the gendering of reputation has allowed recent scholars to explore the cultural register of Lamb’s voices without the need to categorise him as a scaled-down Romantic poet.
