ABSTRACT

The analogy of the 1994 election to a wedding is not too outrageous. With the ANC as groom and the National Party as best man, the problem was the reluctant bride, the IFP. The bride was reluctant because she had been persuaded to hand over her gift, as agreed in the ante-nuptial contract – participation in the election – but the groom had only promised his gift – international mediation on the constitution, and the restoration of the Zulu Kingdom and preservation of the king’s status.
