ABSTRACT

The concept of equity has different social and legal interpretations. Its primitive meaning, if traced back to its Latin source aequum, is physical equality or evenness. In this purely neutral sense equity refers to a balance or an equilibrium; just as the origin of rightness is straightness, the origin of equity is equality.
