ABSTRACT

There is no doubt that society has become much more complex and the affairs of society much more unforeseeable than they were, say, at the beginning of the 20th Century, and decidedly more so than they were even 15 or 20 years ago. Advancements in science and technology, and in knowledge generally, including the means of collecting and transmitting information, are mainly responsible. One result has been a general increase in costs, including legal costs. The purpose of the discussion in this chapter is not simply to examine the extent of the complexity, as it affects the practice of the law, but also to see how its undesirable effects can be minimised.
