ABSTRACT

Discuss the relationship between Community law and national law in the light of the above statement.

3 In 1998, London and other places in the UK are plagued by riots which are sparked by the spiralling cost of beer. The worst riots occur on New Year’s Eve 1998 in Trafalgar Square where more than 50,000 people gather to protest against the high cost of beer. Speakers at the rally denounce the governing Sound Management Party (SMP) for failing to impose a maximum price for beer. The rioters get excited and destroy the statue of Lord Nelson; police officers who try to intervene are thrown by the protesters into the nearby oil-soaked polluted waters of the Thames. At the time of the riots, beer (including beer imported from other EU countries), costs £16.00 sterling a litre in a London pub.
