ABSTRACT

The High Court of Australia stands at the apex of the judicial system and is the final court of appeal in civil and criminal matters. It is composed of seven justices, including a Chief Justice.

Jurisdiction Section 71 of the Constitution states that: ‘The judicial power of the Commonwealth shall be vested in a Federal Supreme Court, to be called the High Court of Australia.’ The Constitution did not actually establish the Court; this was done by the Judiciary Act 1903 (Cth).
