ABSTRACT

Organ transplantation is a valuable therapeutic measure and one which is accepted as a welcome alternative to severe debility or handicap or to premature

death. Corneal, renal, bone marrow, bone, liver, heart, heart-lung and pancreas transplantations are well established procedures in Australia. In the future, however, therapeutic gain or even survival for those with severe organic disease will depend increasingly on the availability of organ donors and the retrieval of any organs suitable for transplantation.
