ABSTRACT

The question now suggests itself: where are we to look for this mysterious other world? It lies somewhere outside our own sphere, beyond a barrier which separates planes, but where geographically does it lie in relation to ourselves? In which direction is the ascetic to make his journey, and from which quarter will the numina and ancestral spirits, summoned by the medium, make their appearance? We must ask, therefore, what is the shape of the universe which accommodates both our own world and the worlds of the kami and the dead.
