ABSTRACT

While conceptually straightforward, the derivation of pluripotent stem cells from human preimplantation embryos requires an exacting approach, as described here.

9.2 Derivation of hES cells The technical process of deriving human embryonic stem cells from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst can be divided into three parts: (a) obtaining suitable embryos; (b) isolating the inner cell mass from the blastocyst; and (c) propagating the inner cell mass as pluripotent stem cells.
