ABSTRACT
The lungs are exposed to a constant barrage of environmental insults. Mucociliary clearance and normal breathing (2 phase flow) are the principal methods employed to clear the lungs of inhaled foreign particles and endogenous cell debris. The cough mechanism is essential when these primary mechanisms are dysfunctional or overwhelmed.
