Key physiological principles • Under normal conditions, the inspiratory muscles generate sufficient force to overcome the
elastic loads of the lungs and chest wall, and resistive loads of the airways and tissues. They possess the ability to maintain a reasonable load over time, as well as adjusting the minute volume to insure adequate gas exchange under various conditions.
