ABSTRACT
The majority of bone is formed from mesenchymal tissues by mineralization of a cartilage model, endochondral ossification, but some is formed by direct mineralization of mesenchymal layers without a cartilage model, intramembranous ossification. Unmineralized bone is known as osteoid.
