ABSTRACT
This book has been about the development and crisis of a production regime that excluded organized labour and substituted supervisory diktat for negotiation – and the consequences of this for health and safety. This regime originated in the early 1970s. It was temporarily challenged but never shifted by the subsequent Labour governments. It found its apogee under the Conservative governments of Mrs Thatcher. Its crisis was short and spectacular, but, like the Thatcher administration itself, was equally swiftly replaced.
