ABSTRACT

Microbiology ‘Atypical bacteria’ is a collective term encompassing Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, Chlamydia, Chlamydophila, Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, Coxiella and Bartonella. These are considered ‘incomplete bacteria’ because they lack some essential components present in other bacteria, and are incapable of independent survival (except for Mycoplasma). They infect viable eukaryotic cells for reproduction.
