The antiretroviral agents There are four classes of antiretroviral agents licensed for clinical use – nucleoside analogue and nonnucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI and NNRTI), protease inhibitors (PI), and fusion inhibitors (FI). These drugs are listed, together with their modes of action and the basis for their selectivity, in Table 1 .
