ABSTRACT

Polyenes Polyenes are broad-spectrum antifungal drugs. They bind to ergosterol and disrupt the fungal cell membrane. Amphotericin B is the principal drug used for invasive fungal infections, but is often poorly tolerated with a number of serious side-effects. However, several lipid-based preparations of amphotericin B are now available that minimize the toxic effects of conventional amphotericin B. These lipid preparations are more efficacious but very expensive. Nystatin is only available for oral or topical use in superficial or mucosal fungal infections.
