ABSTRACT

Physiological and biochemical processes in the human body are temperature sensitive to the point where a small rise in temperature in specific parts of the body may lead to injury, loss of function and eventually death. The maintenance of body temperature is a complicated issue when we consider the vast amount of heat produced by the body and also the interaction with an environment that may see significant temperature changes. Conduction is the transfer of heat from one object to another through direct contact. Think about what happens when we hold an ice cube in our warm hand. Convection involves the transfer of heat between the body and a liquid or gas that moves around the warm body or body parts. As air moves over our skin it is heated to some extent before it moves away to be replaced by more air molecules that can be heated.
