ABSTRACT

In designing an exercise prescription the components of the exercise program as a whole, and the individual training session need to be addressed. The exercise program should include cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness elements, with the inclusion of recreational activities to boost enjoyment and adherence. The prescription should be designed to meet the goals of the participant with the main aim of increasing habitual physical activity. Exercise intensity provides a measure of how hard the client is working relative to their maximal capacity for the given activity. The exercise duration is very much dependent upon the intensity prescribed for the activity. Exercising at a high intensity for long durations will increase the incidence of injury, and is also likely to be intolerable for many people. Multiplying the exercise intensity by the exercise duration provides an index of exercise volume.
