ABSTRACT
Fibreoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) enables direct inspection and instrumentation of the upper and lower airway. Aspiration, bronchoalveolar lavage, bronchial brushings, transbronchial biopsy and protected specimen brushings can obtain diagnostic material. Its indications comprise:
1. Investigation of atelectasis: areas of atelectasis may require bronchoscopy to exclude an obstruction.
