ABSTRACT

Head injury accounts for approximately a third of all trauma deaths and is the leading cause of death and disability in young adults. However, severe head injury may still be compatible with a good outcome. Only preventative measures will help to address the primary brain injury. The role of critical care is to assess and resuscitate, identify intracranial pathology that can be improved by surgery, prevent secondary brain injury through monitoring and intervention and prevent other complications that will reduce the chances of the best possible recovery.
