ABSTRACT
PIRO (Predisposing factors, Infection, Response to the infection and Organ dysfunction) is a new system for classifying septic patients, which is similar to the TNM (Tumour, Node, Metastasis) system for describing malignancies. In comparison with the previous definitions it gives a more precise description of the patient and how they are affected by their illness.
