ABSTRACT

Fungi and oomycetes are generally dispersed as spores that are either deposited in the soil or transmitted through the air. There are many unique and different mechanisms for release of spores from a parent colony. In some cases, the spores are held on structures above the boundary layer of still air adjacent to the leaf surface to enhance their chances of being lifted away in air currents, upon stem vibration, leaf flutter, or in rain splash. In other cases the spores are actively discharged by specific dispersal mechanisms that eject them away from the plant.
