ABSTRACT

Having entered the plant, the fungal or oomycete pathogen must access nutrients for its own growth and development. The strategies that have evolved for doing this are diverse, and studies into the molecular signalling and biochemical processes involved are still in their infancy. This is partly because each pathogen uses its own unique strategy for obtaining nutrients. Indeed it is crucial to remember that when considering a plant disease, we are looking at the outcome of an intimate interaction between the plant and the pathogen, so studies on one fungus can not always be extrapolated to others.
