ABSTRACT
The enhanced understanding of plant diseases and defence responses at the molecular level has led to an explosion of interest in controlling diseases through the genetic modification of plants. That such approaches are technically feasible and can be effective in the laboratory has been clearly proven and it is the science that we will focus on in this chapter. The ongoing moral, ethical, commercial and legislative debate surrounding the use of genetically modified plants has been discussed at length elsewhere and will not be covered in detail here.
