ABSTRACT
So far we have canvassed the relationship between law and force as well as that between law and morality. In this chapter and the next we turn our attention to the issue of the difference, if any, between law and politics. We ask whether there is a distinctive form of reasoning – ‘legal reasoning’ – which is different from ‘political reasoning’ or the reasoning of legislators. Is there an objective way of resolving legal questions on the basis of legal rules and whatever other resources may be contained within the law or is the idea that there are objective answers to legal questions a myth?
