ABSTRACT

Several advantages accrue to society from community policing. Chief among them are the following: (a) enhancement of public confidence in law enforcement; (b) increased social stability; (c) reduction in danger to law officers; (d) avoidance or reduction in societal violence; (e) promotion of a positive image for the police as friends of the community, rather

than simply tools of law enforcement; (f) peaceful co-existence in neighbourhoods; (g) enhancement of relationships; (h) savings in police time from unnecessary arrests and trials; (i) fewer repeat calls on police time; (j) avoidance of, or reduction in, litigation; (k) quick resolution of disputes; and (l) diminishing the need for use of physical force by the police.
