ABSTRACT

Negotiation, like conflict, is a fact of life. A co-operative style, on the other hand, is friendly, courteous and concessionary. It focuses on building trust and promoting relationships. Fisher and Ury have claimed that it is an all-purpose strategy that overcomes the disadvantages in the two other strategies. Communication remains a critical tool in any form of negotiation. Good negotiators apply skills of active listening, paraphrasing and summarising to encourage back and forth communication. The viewpoint of the developing countries of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM), it is proposed to address the conduct of negotiations on the international scene. Caribbean Governments recognize the complexity and importance of these negotiations which together have implications for regional trade in goods and services. The CRNM reports to the CARICOM Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee (PMSC) on External Negotiations, which is currently chaired by Prime Minister Patterson of Jamaica, and through this body to the full Conference of Heads of Government of the Community.
