ABSTRACT

The ‘appropriate multiplier’ is such multiplier as the Secretary of State may prescribe by statutory instrument (s 37(8) of the 1954 Act). This is currently the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 (Appropriate Multiplier) Order 1990 (SI 1990/363), which provides that the appropriate multiplier is one (unless the date of service of the landlord’s s 25 notice or s 26(6) counternotice was on or before 31 March 1990, in which case the appropriate multiplier is three).
