ABSTRACT
Broadly speaking, the ridge patterns found on fingertips come in three forms, with a recognised frequency in the population. It is worth noting that individuals with abnormal chromosome complements, such as Down’s syndrome, have a very different frequency of ridge pattern which can be used as an aid to diagnosis of the condition. The different types and normal frequencies are: • loops (70%); • whorls (25%); • arches (5%).
